What Can Obama Do For Kashmir?

Naveed Qazi

Barack Obama has won the race to be the next President of the United States of America. Congratulations are in order. However there is a little worry on the minds of many Indian commentators.Obama's recent comment on Kashmir have induced new hopes for Kashmiris. No former president nor even a nominee knows so much intricacy about the Kashmir issue, the way Obama does.

Now the Question Arises:

Can He Deliver For Kashmir?

Not many know this,he knows some kashmiris and he had a college friend whose family lived in Pakistan Administered Kashmir. So he has connections with that country and I doubt that he knows any Indians or has visited India. I dont say international dealings go with whom you have a feast! But I just want to say that he is remotely familiar with our people  region. He has further expounded on a theory with a suggestion that Bill Clinton could be a special envoy for the Kashmir crisis.

His Vice President, Joe Biden is an experienced hand on international affairs and is likely to have a major say in shaping the contours of Obama administration’s foreign policy. In 2001, Joe Biden, as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, sent a letter to President Bush asking for lifting of American economic and military sanctions imposed on India in 1998 for its test of a nuclear weapon. He, however, was not prepared to go along with a similar request for Pakistan.

Indian foreign ministry should be highly concerned about this. Obama's foreign policy on Afghanistan somehow finds resistance with Pakistan only because Pakistan has old scores to settle with India on Kashmir. Rather, he wants India to resolve the issue peacefully without international intervenes. Sooner or later we need to have our say. Let us hope Obama's portend are in a favor with us. India's barbaric policy on Kashmir can likely hit panic button.
